Combining Events – Saving Spoons

Birthdays and family days like Father’s day are important to our family, but no so much so that they require grandiose dinners, parties and each to their own special date.

Father’s day comes about a week earlier than Kellan’s bday, which comes 4 days before my husband’s. We combine them. This saves a lot of spoons.

This year I hosted the combined event so to save some spoons, planned it at a park with a covered eating area, and a playground for the boys. I could focus on food and prep instead of cleaning the house.

It’s always a good idea to start with the youngest if you’re combining events. They simply can’t wait any longer. The morning was hard enough explaining that it wasn’t happening until lunch time. Adults usually have no problem waiting a few extra minutes for their gifts, and it gives the little ones something to keep them occupied with the Adults are doing their thing.

Happy 4th birthday Kellan! Ever though we had the family birthday on Sunday, on Kellan’s bday we had him open his gifts from us. Plus we let birthday person choose their dinner.

Next came my husband’s fathers day and birthday gifts. He’s still new to the whole gift thing. He was raised JW, and until we got together, he never had celebrated birthdays or events like Father’s day. Makes it even a little more special. Mum made Papa that new flannel shirt he’s holding up for his father’s day gift. It’s rare for grand gifts in our family. Usually it’s gifts from the heart, for example, my gift to Papa was homemade chocolate chip cookies WITH walnuts (ugh can’t stand them) and cooked to a crisp (we prefer slightly squishy, dad doesnt). Sister got him more mini snickers and milky way candies to refill his nibble stash. It’s little things that mean a lot.

And thankfully my mum knows how much events take out of me and was more than happy to feed and hold her grandbaby.
